I've been a very happy user of Synology systems for quite a few years now. The past few weeks I've ran into quite some performance issues though, so I decided to get to the bottom of it.
Symptoms:
I have undertaken a few steps that seem to have gotten me in the right direction...
In order to disable Universal Search:
Make the following changes:
ctl_stop="yes"
ctl_uninstall="yes"
You can now restart Package Center in the GUI, browse to Universal Search / SynoFinder and stop the service. You could even uninstall it if you like.
In order to disable the Indexer daemon:
The second step is needed to also stop and disable the synomkthumb and synomkflvd services, which rely upon the synoindexd.
One reboot later and things have quieted down. I'll keep an eye on things the next few days.

Sonnoffa!.. D:
This did not solve the problem. A day later the system is back at a load average >8.00 and 60-99% IOWAIT. What the hay? I'll have to dig deeper!

Seems that the first disk in the NAS is getting stuck at 90% of its SMART test. Could be indicative of hardware problems. Wouldn't be odd, as it's one of the two original drives in there. I'll poke around a little more. The health report also fails to come up on drive 1, so that's telling.

Yup... disabled the suspicious drive through the storage manager and my iowait times have dropped completely. Time to pop in a replacement.

Confirmed: disk replaced, volume's been restored to full health and the system is purring along beautifully. Guess that drive was failing silently.

I can tell you this much: after the fixes I described above:
* The GUI and SSH are responsive again.
* Backups and file transfers to the NAS work again.
* The system is fast and responsive, with low load and "normal" volume util.
