*sigh* I don't know what it is with me and expensive stuff, but I just did it again! Not even a month after I drop my iPhone, I fumble my TZ3 which was only a year old. The camera still works fine, but part of the body got bent in such a way that the lens won't come out properly. I think I -might- be able to bend it back.
If all else fails, luckily our insurance covers this accident because it happened at home.
*sigh* I should stick to Playskool and My first Sony. =_=;

The photograph above looks pretty nice, but it's also one of the most expensive shots I ever took. Right before I made it I fumbled my iPhone, which promptly fell on the brick path I was walking. The case has split open on one side and the lower left corner of the screen has cracked. ;_;
Early morning in Drenthe sure looks nice though.

Speaking of overtime... Why is it that every time I try to implement a quick fix for a sucky SNAFU in our BoKS environment, I get stuck in the office at night? Every single fscking time! Case in point, last Friday I discovered a rather crappy mixup in our BoKS infrastructure. Nothing critical, but it was causing a lot of people discomfort nonetheless. I stayed late that day to troubleshoot the issue and to formulate a hypotheses on the required fixes.
Today I went over said fixes with my colleagues and at 1500 started the implementation of the first "quick fix". It was supposed to be done with within an hour, but I'm still stuck here. The replica server just doesn't want to do it's work and now I'm waiting for tech support to get back to me I'm looking at my twelfth hour on the job today and I'd really like to go home to Marli and Dana. Hacking and dining at the office just isn't as cool as it used to be. Now I have people to take care of...

I guess that with every big occasion at least one screw up needs to be made, right? Well I just made the one when it comes to our baby's birth. Luckily it's nothing to do with Dana herself :)
You wouldn't believe it, but I made a spelling mistake in her name on the baby cards. I proof read the card three times before sending it through e-mail, then I checked the proof three weeks ago and I double checked it today. I happened to notice a missing "s" in the sentence above, but somehow managed to miss the additional "c" in her name. Seriously, how the heck did I get to "Janicque" on the card?! Who's ever heard of a "c" where "ique" is normal?
Ah well... If this is the only thing I'll screw up, I'll be a very happy man ^_^

With the baby on the way (less than four weeks and counting!) I was planning on ticking things off the ToDo list, instead of putting new items on there. So "yay me!" for accidentally ripping the curtains and their rail from the ceiling this evening. *le sigh*
*puts a new item on the list*
At least we had a nice evening in with Menno and Kaijuu (who just returned from Japan tonight).

*sigh* Why Ikea, why? Why would you choose a weird construction made out of cheap plastic to keep a shelf on its place in our bookcase? Why forego the tried and tested wooden or metal plugs? Why force me to screw and tinker for three minutes, just to install a shelf?
Or more importantly: why choose a material that will fail catastrophically in a few years time?
I just entered our basement storage room to take out the garbage and the floor was covered in all my DIY materials. Tools, nails, parts: all strewn across the floor :( As I said: the plastic keeping up the shelves in said bookcase had failed and thus all four toolboxes got deposited on the floor. Le sigh I'd better go and get some real plugs RSN(tm).

Oh man, today was a -very- close call.
Next week's Anime 2008 and I wouldn't miss it for the world! This is the first time in five years that I'll attend Anime 200x without any organisational responsibilities. I'll be just another visitor. Glee! ^_^
Of course I'd made sure to get everything sorted at $CLIENT weeks in advance. Everything, except one very, very crucial thing. You see, I'm still on the stand-by roster for my old department to help'm out. Once in a few weeks I get my shift and need to be on stand-by all night. You see where this is going? ...
Ya.
I'd taken care of everything, -except- the roster for my old team. And yes, next week I'm on call. Fux0r! *bangs head against wall*
Luckily three of my colleagues were willing to trade and switch and hussle and such, thus making sure that I wouldn't have to miss our festival. Thank $DEITY. I realize this was my own fault and I really appreciate how these guys helped me out. :)

Apologies for all the profanity...
Fsck it all to hell! I just threw away two weeks of work for this semester's biggest project because of a careless rsync. Fsck! Ten pages of well-written text, including research and some other important stuff: all gone. FSCK! This is what I hate about keeping two computers as primary work locations. When copying files back and forth it's so easy to make a mistake! That's why I used rsync, but apparently I screwed up. Fsck.
Yes, I do make backups, but only once a month. And since I'm not running Time Machine I can't simply go back to the previous version of the document.
I'm praying that PhotoRec can help me out. Seriously, if I can't get it back, I don't know how I can rewrite it all. Or more importantly, how I can even fscking motivate myself to write it again.

*sigh* You know how sometimes things can get cross-wired in your brain in a permanent fashion? So that every time you want to do A, you do B? I've one of those and I've already made the mistake twice at $CLIENT. One of my colleagues already suggested the idea of making a Sluyter-check monitoring script ^_^;
Here's what happens. For about a year now the commands "nslookup" and "hostname" have been mixed up in my head. I -know- what each command does, but I always type "hostname", when I want to do "nslookup". In most cases I quickly backspace and type the right command, but so far I've fscked up twice :/
For those not in the know:
* Nslookup is used to find the network address for a computer.
* Hostname is used to change the actual hostname for a UNIX computer.
Renaming a server on the fly can lead to some serious problems, especially if it happens to be part of a cluster. Well, guess what I did yesterday and -didn't- notice? Yea... ;_;
I'll start working on that monitoring script now... *hangs head in shame*

Wow, am I happy that I hung onto my Ubuntu and Knoppix live CDs! Once every year I seem to need to them to rescue someone's ass ^_^
In a sort of copy-cat maneuver of last year's debacle involving Marli's laptop my sister Luthien's external disk decided to die. It'd started to make the same seeking noises (whirwhirwhirwhirCLICK), which is never a good sign.
So, we have yet again:
* A windows formatted disk (NTFS this time).
* An unreadable disk even, one that crashes Windows once it's attached.
* Lots of important, irreplacable data.
* And no backups ;_;
Actually, this used to be her backup drive, until she ran out of space on the laptop. Seriously, a lot of people do this very same thing, so I'm not blaming her. Too much... :3
Anywho... Just like last year, booting from a Linux live CD let me mount the disk and copy data off of it. Because the disk seems to be broken it's going horribly slowly (to the tune of 40MB in 5 minutes), but at least we're getting to the data.
o Huzzah for Linux! /o/
(I guess it can be useful after all)
Now... I need to get to work in about an hour, but before I go I'll need to reschedule my school work. All of this has cut into my working hours well hard, so I'm going to have to drop some parts of my planning. 't Should be okay though.

Phew, that was a potential CLM...
A few months ago, on one of the fora I frequent, there was a thread asking about work experiences at $PREVIOUSCLIENT. Not wanting to break any NDAs I didn't go into details. I did however mention that it wasn't a fun place, nor one that put value on professional attitudes. I also happened to make a not-so-nice comparison with one of history's less-than-nice eras.
Anywho, it seems that one of the guys at $PREVIOUSCLIENT went looking for threads like those and ran into the comment I left. Word hadn't reached management yet, but I -was- called by a fellow Snower. Worried about the effect the comment may have on the ties between Snow and $PREVIOUSCLIENT he asked me to change the comment. Which I did.
In retrospect I have to agree with the guy: it wasn't smart of me to even participate in the thread. But seriously, when you're frustrated about something big, it's hard to not talk about it. You want to let it out and you want to warn others before walking into a trap. Let's just hope that this doesn't turn nasty.
In the meanwhile I'll scour my website and the rest of the web for other nasties that I may have left.
EDIT: Sorry Ars Lounge. Forgot to close a double quote.

I guess I'm just not lucky when it comes to my Diesel glasses. The day before yesterday, turning in for bed, I folded my glasses shut to put them on my night stand. Then, all of a sudden I was holding a two-piece frame ;_; One of the legs had simply come off. Apparently there was something about the molded plastic casing that had gotten brittle. I've no clue what caused it, but the plastic had simply come apart. -Really- odd.
I dropped my glasses off at the shop yesterday and I'll get them back in about a week. I am -so- happy that I'd had the sense to buy two pairs of glasses back in December!

What is it with me and laptops?! Why do I always end up damaging them out of my own stupidity? I haven't even had my Macbook for a month and I've already damanged the screen. I threw my digicam's USB cable on the couch and apparently the connector clipped the screen. So now there's a 1mm x 4mm scratch in it. Grr.

I don't know whether it's irony, or just daft old me...
At the office I'm in charge of the duty roster for our team, making sure that all holidays are booked, that all daily tasks gets planned and that everybody knows what they ought to be doing on which days. I even send out an e-mail every Friday, reminding the team of their duties for the next two weeks.
So why is it that I forgot that I'm on stand-by duty this week? XD
My phone was turned off, my laptop's in my drawer at the office and I missed an emergency call at 0600. Luckily it was only a category B server which means that in the end the customer did get what they were paying for ^_^;

Make sure that, if you have a SNAFU earlier on, things are still working properly! Yesterday I had a little accident while moving files around on the web server and I thought I'd restored everything. Apparently I hadn't, which led to commenting on the main page being broken.

Gorramit! Fsck, fsck, fsck!
I haven't had these glasses for more than ten days and they're already fscking broken! D: *grr* *angry*
They took a 50cm drop into the bathroom sink, which apparently was too much to take with the way they were cut. ;_; I guess they don't call it a hoge brekingsindex (high refractory index) for nothing. *sigh*
Thank Jeebus I had them insured. And thank Jeebus again that I was smart enough to buy backup glasses as well!

I've had my glasses for three years now and they've given me quite some trouble. After about a year they broke at midframe, leaving the pair quite useless. Getting replacement parts apparently was hard for the store, as they had to come from Italy and the first replacement midframe came in the wrong colour as well. After getting a new replacement the store also managed to break my left lens, resulting in more delays.
And today, after little over three years, the midframe broke again. *grr*
So we were forced to go on a shopping trip that wasn't very easy on the bank account ;_;
* My current glasses are going to be soldered as a stopgap solution. Luckily that'll only set us back around eight euros.
* My current, temporary glasses are in the wrong prescription so I shouldn't wear them too long.
* We bought a new pair of glasses of the Diesel brand (DS0014/U). Here's the same pair for sale at Frames Direct. Don't know how long they're up for show. Anyway, we got those in shiny black. That'll set us back around three-eighty.
* We also got a new pair of temp glasses, just in case. We were very happy that the salesman at Pearl gave us a stiff discount on that one, as it still comes in at one-twenty.
Yea... Lenses don't come cheap at my prescription ;_; The new values? -9.5 on the left and -9.0 on the right... I think I ought to go see an eye doctor at the hospital some time soon. It's been over fifteen years since I went to see one.
The horror... The horror... The last doctor I went to see was quite horrible, and couldn't stand the fact that I do _not_ accept eye drops. They needed three people to get the drops in my eyes (one to restrain me, one to peel my eyes open and one to put in the drops). Geh! I'm tearing up at the thought D:
Hopefully, this time around things'll be a bit better.

FSCK FSCK FSCK!!! X_X
I had just finished adding the code that would allow you guys to add comments to my blog posts and I'd finished testing the code. So I went to clean up all my test posts from the comments database. I press "Empty" in PHPmyAdmin, return to the front page of Kilala.nl and what do I see?
Nothing...
AAAUGH!!!
I'd emptied the wrong database! I didn't pay enough attention and deleted all my blog posts ;_;
So for now both this page and the Archives for 2006 will be empty. I'll spend the better part of tonight fixing my stupid fsckup, but things'll be empty all day. Stupid thing is, I don't make regular backups of this database yet, so I'll lose about a month of blogposts, simply because I don't have them in normal HTML (as part of my "old" site). So any which way you look at it, a whole bunch of blog posts are lost forever.

In what archeologists will come to call "The Great SNAFU of 2006" I accidentally deleted all of my blog posts (as you can read in the blog post after this one). Because I could only find 95% of all blog posts, I'm missing out on a whole bunch of things. A shame really.
I'll try to recall summarize what has become lost, so it won't be completely forgotten.
Website news:
I added two new sections to my personal section. They're about my beliefs and my likes/dislikes. These lists will grow in the next few months, allowing one to form a decent picture of my character.
Professional news:
Aside from the fact that I'm expanding the Sysadmin section with loads of stuff on SNMP, I also visited the Megabit festival. To sum it up quickly: wet, quite small and IMHO not very interesting. I'm hoping they'll have more luck next year. It was nice to see Willow again though.
Fun stuff:
I was wondering why stuff like this never happened in any of the real Transformers cartoons. I was also plugging the Perry Bible Fellowship which in actuality is quite a cruel and funny webcomic.
And I told you about the latest Apple themed Lego playset by Pod Brix
Finally, I told you about a cool USB hub I saw on Akihabara news. Recently they even put up a .WMV HD movie clip showing how the hub works and all the cool features it has. Shiny!
That about sums it up really.

Ah yes! Yet another display of my client's wonderful way of working together as a team XD
The past few weeks I've been working fulltime on a completely new Nagios monitoring environment for the division that hired me. 'sCool, since I quite like Nagios and since it's a challenge (~500 hosts with over 8000 checks). But what's seriously uncool, is the fact that the server I was building my packages on was turned off and taken apart. Yes: "apart". The hard drive containing my software is now lying in someone's deks drawer -_-;
But luckily there's some cool stuff on the horizon as well! Yesterday I received my new cell phone, a Nokia 6021. It's a really boring phone, that doesn't do anything special except BlueTooth, GPRS and Tri-Band. But that's exactly what I want! I really dislike phones with all kinds of added crap and bags on the side.
Anywho: I always thought I'd never need BlueTooth, but now that I have it I couldn't do without it! Syncing my contacts with my laptop is a dream and using Salling Clicker to control my laptop is -wonderful-! This'll come in -so- handy when I'm giving my next presentation :3

Sometimes I just really want to kick myself... Hard... In the nads... x_x
I had a -very- bad night with only about an hour of sleep. Starting work at 0400 by my own volition and then dozing off around 0800 I was startled and woke again around 0830... What did I do then? I stood up... Right on top of my sweet, little iBook! So now the glass in the LCD's cracked, although the screen's still working. Hopefully Apple can fix the damage -quickly- since I rely on this laptop 100% for both my work and the Anime 2006 festival. ;_;

Waho! Finaly!
It took me quite a while, but just tonight I decided to get off my lazy arse and do something about those casemods which were still lying around, waiting for me. So I picked up all the bits and pieces which're needed for my neon-mod. The soldering and all went nicely, but I made a _horid_ mistake along the line!
