Woot! Signed artwork from Humon

2011-09-18 20:29:00

Finland

This weekend was Dana's birthday, but Kaijuu even got me a little something!

A few weeks back he visited a Danish anime convention where the lovely Humon, of Scandinavia and the world, was also signing and selling her stuff. Knowing of my Finnish descent, Kaijuu got me a signed sketch of the ever-silent, ever-grumpy and ever-murderious Finland.

GLEE! ^_^

Steampunk comic I'm reading: Lovelace and Babbage

2010-11-03 19:37:00

TO THE DIFFERENCE ENGINE!!!

Just a small blip to let you know I'm still alive and that I'm enjoying the hell out of an old web comic which I've recently discovered: Lovelace and Babbage. As the title suggests the main characters of the comic are historic figures and the supposed grand parents of modern computing: Ada Lovelace and Charles Babbage. Obviously, in reality they never fought crime, nor built robotic women (to fetch drinks), nor fought street musicians with mathematical formulae. But I don't care, because I really enjoy it all :)

Besides, it surely helps that the comic's author also adds a lot of post script with information and little tidbits about the actual Babbage and Lovelace :)

EDIT:

Hahahahaha! This is fscking priceless! Lovelace and Babbage build a model of the economy, which confirms that over-stimulus leads to hyperinflation :) *KABOOM!* Hilarious :)

New web comic bookmarked: Templar, AZ

2009-04-16 15:41:00

I don't even know where I found out about Templar, Arizona, but so far I'm loving it to bits! I think I was drawn in by a Keenspot banner featuring Reagan <3

Anywho... What I love most about Templar is the artwork by Spike. She does awesome line work and I love her chara design. For example, one can tell by one look at the aforementioned Reagan that she's loud, uninhibited, brash and sexy. The complete lack of colour and minimalistic approach to detail make this one heck of a comic to read. I'll definitely buy the books when I can!

Mind you, if you don't like swearing and such, steer clear of this one ^_^

Too Much Coffee Man

In preparation of our move to the new place we've started going through all the boxes in storage. The past three years we've managed to gather quite a lot of cruft, let me tell you!

Among my old school and work papers I stumbled upon a bunch of notebooks from past jobs, including my last internship. While mindlessly leafing through one of the pads I found the list of web comics I used to read. Man, that took me back!

Since then a bunch of those comics have gone bust and some of the others have lost their charm. However, that still leaves me with a short list of web comics that I'd forgotten and that I've now put back on my list. These include:

* Down to earth. God and the devil pissing eachother off.

* Too much coffee man. The depressed, stressed out and hyperactive superhero!

* You damn kid!. 50's style comics meet disturbing jokes.

* Bob the angry flower, home to Bob's quick guide to the apostrophe, you idiots.

Good stuff :) I'm very glad that the TMCM archives are still complete and online.

Books, books, books!

2009-01-30 21:03:00

A stack of books

Recently we've been devouring books again :)

On a whim I bought Marli the first book from the Twilight series of fantasy books. It seems that these high school love/drama + vampires stories are all the rage these days and are being touted as "the new Harry Potter". Marli certainly seems to like them, as we bought her the remaining three books immediately after finishing the first ^_^

I put this order of books to good use by getting something for myself as well.

First off I got the final chapter to the Locas stories by Jaime Hernandez (part of the Love and rockets comic series that started in the eighties), called Ghost of Hoppers. I still need to get a bunch of the chapters that come before it, but I don't mind :) GoH certainly is dark and at times surreal, but I love it anyway. The artwork has a rather particular style (which I described earlier) and I love the chara design of leading lady Maggie ("rubenesque", one could say). My heart was also aflutter after the final eight panels of the book, which -finally- give happy closure to the saga.

I also ordered on of the many omnibuses with stories by H.P. Lovecraft. I'd been meaning to get some of his books for a long time and in the past years I've read a whole bunch of them as ebooks, but finally I got some in print as well. Seriously, this stuff may have been written before 1930, but it still amazes me how it's chill-inducing even with broad daylight! Riveting and scary, even in the middle of a crowded room!

New web comic: 3 Hoog (Third floor)

2008-09-25 14:01:00

Let's put out an advert!

It's no secret that I like comics. Funny comics, exciting comics, serious comics, to me they really aren't any less than a good novel. So far I've always made one exception though: I've never liked photo comics very much. Today however I ran into one that I rather enjoy: 3 Hoog (Third floor).

Photo comics usually stand out in the overacted facial expressions and gestures, something that can get annoying really fast. The fact that 3 Hoog actually has some funny dialogue and writing makes up for it :) The comics follow the day-to-day activities of three students who share an apartment in Utrecht (our home town!).

Two of my favourites would be Kamer te huur (Room for rent) and Goede voornemens (New year's resolutions). Yes, the humor is -totally- studentesque and low brow, but that shouldn't be too surprising since the strip gets published in the weekly mag of the University of Utrecht. :)

Bye bye, Megatokyo

2008-07-13 09:02:00

It's not often that I bump a web comic from my bookmarks. There's a set of fifteen comics that I read on a daily basis and sometimes I add a new one to the list. However, now's the first time in almost a year that I'm taking one out: Megatokyo.

I'm sorry Fred, but your story's grown boring and has always been very slow. I liked it when it still bordered on the realistic, but now that Largo's fantasies seem to have taken over all of the comic, I can't be bothered with it anymore. *click*

New webcomic added to bookmarks: "Least I could do"

2008-06-21 16:13:00

Comic from Least I Could Do.

Today, instead of spending most of my time learning for my geometry test, I read through most of the Least I could do archives. I don't remember where I originally saw their banner, but it was interesting enough to check out :)

LICD so far seems like a damn good webcomic. The pacing is good, the artwork is consistent and the writing is such that just about every comic has a joke inserted in it. The subject matter helps too, given that the authors usually limit themselves to story lines about sex, getting drunk, geeky pursuits and more sex. So if you're not into any of those, steer clear ^_^

I'll definitely be reading this one on a daily basis. Good stuff and it's a worthy addition to the growing list of daily comics I read.

Here's another strip, though it's parked behind a link 'cause it's a bit more... shall we say, R-rated?

The history of a community: the Ars Openfora

2008-01-29 23:53:00

A silly comic of someone pooping in the server room.

At the Ars Technica fora we're chronicling the famous moments of our community, through the medium of comics. All of these comics are quickly put together using the awesome Strip Generator applet.

I've contributed a few comics, about stuff that's stuck in my mind. Stuff like the Jacqui cheated on Clint with Visigothan, but it was a joke drama. Stuff like Thallium's insatiable lust for brains. And of course there's Androgen's insane asshattery.

I am very flattered though, that someone saw fit to also include my very recent There is poop in the server room thread ^_^ Wingfooted's comic has had me giggling all day :)

I really love this thread and I'll be saving it for posterity. I love looking back on a community that I've been a part of for over seven years :)

Comiket #73, an impression of what's there

2007-12-31 10:19:00

Mind you, I've only seen about 1/12th of one of the days, so it's really a very limited impression :)

First off: there's a lot of talent in Japan! A lot of these people are really good artist and their drawings are awesome.

There's a lot of diversity when it comes to presentation. One thing that most of them have in common is that they know how to design a good cover. I've seen very busy covers, I've stylish/clean covers, but all of them were gripping. Some use ordinary black and white, some use an explosion of colours, some go with special papers for the cover and some add other effects, like glitters, holographic plastic and one even added fur!

The coolest thing to see though, is the great variety in artistic styles. There's everything from realistic, to super-deformed. There's messy artists, there's clean artists, there's traditional artists and there's modern artists. It's very cool :)

I wish I could show you guys all of the stuff that I've bought, but it's a bit too much work for now :) You can view the covers of the doujins I bought in today's gallery (linked below).

Donald Duck: strawman for the record labels

2007-12-01 15:31:00

Donald Duck trying to pirate a CD

Translation for the USadians:

Pic2: "Did you go out and buy that record anyway? With what money?" "Don't worry, we DOWNLOADED the music!"

Pic3: "Then we burnt it onto a CD. We'll keep this one until we buy the original."

Pic4: "Why not KEEP this one then?" "That's not nice! There's COPYRIGHTS on all music. If noone bought any CDs, then the musicians and record label bosses would go poor!."

I love reading Donald Duck magazine each week. However, this was a rather "meh" surprise. Apparently DD has taken to lecturing kids about pirating music and how it's like stealing. The story goes on with Donald thinking he can go out and sell a hundred copies, making a quick buck. At that point, Uncle Scrooge jumps in through the window and threatens to sue him for all he's got. Of course, Donald decides against his plan and Scrooge promises not to sue him "because he's family".

Anyone else reminded of the RIAA? Meh, two perfectly good pages of a comicmag ruined :/

Studio Foglio - Girl Genius omnibus 1

2007-11-08 15:52:00

A long while back I first wrote about Girl Genius. I'd immediately fallen in love with the steampunk comic (which can be read online over here).

I wanted to support Mr. Foglio's work by buying some of his work in print. That'd also give me a chance to read Girl Genius offline ^_^ Because things are a bit tight these days, I opted for the $10 omnibus edition that gathers volumes 1 through 3 in one book.

I won't go into the story deeply, simply because I've already spoken about it earlier. The series is a steampunt adventure, with loads of action, comedy and a little drama thrown in for good measure. The artistic style of Mr. Foglio will not be up everyone's alley, but I'd suggest to try and ignore that and focus on the story instead.

The book itself looks pretty good. It isn't shabby and doesn't fall into pieces like other, cheap comic books. The print quality is very crisp. The only downside is that the whole book's in black and white, with the original colour pages being printed a tad too dark.

All in all, the book's definitely worth its money!

Vendettas, screenplays and 1984

2007-09-16 09:41:00

A few screens from 1984 and V.

You know, I'd swear I'd written about V for Vendetta before. I bought and devoured the comic book a few months ago. I loved it, though I have to admit that it wasn't the easiest read ever. I saw very strong ties with 1984, likening the storyline to what could've happened to Brittain if folks like Winston had stood up for themselves.

Last Friday we bought a few more DVDs and I finally picked up V for Vendetta as well. It's been a long time in coming, with my brother nagging me about it :D

Before I comment on anything related to the screenplay, let me say that it was a stroke of genius casting to get John Hurt to play the role of Adam Sutler. John Hurt of course played Winston in the movie rendition of 1984, giving a striking portrayal of one of Oceania's oppressed citizens. Imagine my surprise to see one of Big Brother's oppressed assuming the character of his own Big Brother! In a further stroke of irony, that cannot have been anything but intended, both Winston's and Adam's final, climactic scenes share many similarities. I'd almost expected Adam to cry out: Do it to her! Do it to Julia! Don't do it to me!.

Which actually refreshes my mind some more! Was it in 1984 that there was a first mention of that final inch that they will never be able to take? Or was it in V and am I imagining things?

Now... The screenplay adaption of V contained many dissimilarities when compared to the comic book. Many of these changes were functional and an almost entirely new story was forged. I enjoyed this new story quite a lot and think that the author(s) did a great job. The only thing that vexes me is the humanization of the character V towards the end. V was always intended to be the personification of an idea. Breaking that down, if only a little, to fit in the oh-so-required love scene detracts from the original story.

All in all, V for Vendetta is a great book and was made into a great movie! It gives one food for thought, as do other, similar books. Knowing that stories like these can still be written and heard gives one a little hope for humanity. Knowing that there are still people out there, smart enough to be critical of their government and to propagate said ideas.

Then again, it may all be a ruse by them to lull us into a false sense of security, or of empowerment. ;)

Drawings based on various manga and anime

2007-08-25 19:53:00

A few of the pencil drawings from Battle Angel Alita and Gunsmith Cats were used as graphics for the Anime 2002 convention booklet. I was quite proud of that back then. Overall I now realise that I am definitely not good at drawing stuff that I need to think up myself. I however am quite good at copying other people's work... Maybe I should become a tracer. Liane the wanderer - Jack Vance and Thomas Sluyter

2007-08-23 21:21:00

After my first, failed attempt at a continued comic came the second. This time around I let someone else do the writing, while I interpret it into imagery. I chose Jack Vance's Liane the wanderer for a few reasons.

Liane is a rather short story with clear progression of the story line. There's a mystery and at the end there's an unexpected turn. Back then I was rather pleased with the results, even if I didn't finish the last page.

The misadventures of Cailin

2007-08-23 21:13:00

In late 2002 I wanted to try my hand at a full length comic. I didn't really have a story in mind and just started drawing. The first two pages of the story can be read individually and are only linked by the characters in them. The third page was to segue the whole story into a fantasy setting and that's where I just got stuck.

Serves me right for writing a story without coming up with a story :D

Hey is for horses!

2007-07-14 20:45:00

Wow, this is a flashback! I Googled the random line "Hey is for horses" after reading it in the short story Hey Hopey from that Love and rockets book. I've know that line as Hey is voor paarden ever since I was about twelve or thirteen after reading it in (what I now realize was) another L&R short. Back then it was feature in a dutch, underground comic mag called zone 5300.

Anywho... The flashback part got bigger with this Google result. The song featured on that page is completely constructed from programmed tunes built into a Casio keyboard. The very same Casio keyboard that I owned when I was twelve! o_O What a great coincidink!

Jaime Hernandez - Maggie the mechanic

2007-07-14 19:32:00

A small sample from the book

*makes notch in table* Scratch another book from my reading list! ^_^

Today I finished Maggie the mechanic by Jaime Hernandez. MtM contains the first set of Maggie and Hopey stories every created by the Hernandez brothers, with stories ranging from one to over fifty pages. While the subject matter differs, you could class these comics among other underground works like Ghostworld or Robert Crumb's stuff.

It takes a while to get stuck in the book. The first few stories are a bit slow, but once I hit the first long story things got good! Mechanics takes Maggie and her colleagues to far and distant places where they end up fixing a crashed space ship in the middle of a dinosaur-filled jungle. If that doesn't sound like Cadillacs and Dinosaurs I don't know what does! Since the story line appealed to me Jaime also persuaded me to invest more interest in the characters. With time I feel myself starting to care for Maggie, Hope en Rena.

After Mechanics, Jaime takes us back and forth between farfetched sci-fi arcs and down-to-earth plots back in California. Like last time, let's dig into a few of the characteristics of the book.

Artwork. Jaime's character designs may not be attractive to everyone. While I'm not made about all of the designs, I do enjoy the fifties/sixties advertisement look of some of the characters. I'm well impressed by Jaime's consequent drawing as, in my eyes, there's no real progression in quality over the years: the drawings are great from the get-go! Since everything's done in black and white and Jaime does not make use of any rastering tools, shadows and inking are -very- important. I'm glad to say that both are spot on! Some panels are just damn impressive.

Big women. I was originally brought to Love and rockets by an article in Big is beautiful magazine. Said article discussed comic artists who'd specialised in drawing big or strong women in a positive fashion. And indeed, Jaime does not shun larger women in both leading or supporting roles! Rena Tetanon (at one time the world chamion of women's wrestling) plays a rather important role and a few years into the narrative Maggie also takes a turn for the Rubenesque. It's great to read a book where large women (or men for that matter) are not simply portrayed as slow or dimwitted overeaters.

Characters. Most of the main characters have well-developed back stories, glimpses of which are shared through flashbacks and such. The lovers' relationship between Maggie and Hopey is taken through twists and turns, delving nicely into subjects as infatuation, love, jealousy, rage and grief. I was very pleased that Jaime saw fit to throw in rather random characters as well! While horned millionaires, Mexican pro-wrestlers and odd demons and robots may detract from realism, they certainly do add colour!

80's culture. Through Jaime's pen we are allowed to relive part of the 80's in California. Sure, a lot of it comes filtered through caricatural glasses, but still. Seeing love and sci-fi stories interspersed with professional wrestling, the punk-rock scene and Latin-American culture was a joy to me.

Seriously... The Love and rockets stories aren't for everyone. Some will be turned off by the artwork and some will definitely be turned off by the story telling itself. Me, I'm quite pleased having bought the book and believe it to be a worthy addition to my book shelves :)

Two cherry pi shirts and one crush all humans.

A little over two weeks ago I ordered three shirts from Diesel Sweeties taking advantage of Rich's offer for three shirts on the cheap. I got two of my beloved Cherry Pi shirts and one Crush all humans! for added coolness.

Since the US Postal Services claimed they'd need two to six weeks to get the stuff to my doorstep I wasn't expecting the parcel until sometime in June. Lo and behold, what do I find in my mailbox today? A note telling me that a box is waiting for me at my neighbor's place. w00t!

The shirts look great, although I'm scared what the laundry machine will do to the Pi shirts. The numbers look a little delicate, so I'll be sure to wash them extra carefully. Mr Stevens also included a great sticker (Warning! May contain up to 20% angry robots by volume!) that I hope to find a cool spot for. I don't think I'll be putting it on my company car ;)

Steampunk web comic: Girl Genius

2007-04-21 15:24:00

Five drawings from Girl Genius.

While browsing through all of the pages at Steampunk Workshop I stumbled on a link to a supposedly rather good steampunk-themed webcomic called Girl Genius. Always interested in comics revolving around that theme I read a few pages and immediately recognized the hand of Phil Foglio. I was first introduced to Phil's work through various cards from the Magic: the Gathering game and then through his comics for Inquest magazine.

Now, I -love- the Girl Genius story, which combines Victorian Europe, with aliens, science fiction and Indiana Jones-styled adventures. I've put the published books on my wishlist, definitely wanting the ability to read them in print, instead of on my screen.

There's just one thing that has always irked me about Mr. Foglio's style: one minute he draws sultry, gorgeous women, and the other they looks as crude as some of Illiad's earlier works. It's something that I find hard to reconcile...

But still, I can heartily recommend his comics! Go have a read, if you have nothing else to do ;)

Uncovering childhood memories

2007-03-05 19:37:00

Donald Duck reciting a poem.

In the course of one's life certain words or sentences get stuck in your head, never to leave there again. You'll be repeating something you picked up when you were seven years old when you're eighty-seven and in the old folks' home.

For me these include things like EnWiAkDuFa, which was my reminder for my wednesday's schedule during my third year in high school. Or SOSCASTOA, which was a maths shortcut to the Sine-Cosine-Tangent rules. Or Zij brengt rozen op Gerrit's graf bij vies grijs weer (or translated into English Betty brings roses on Yorick's grave by vapid, grey weather), which is the engineer's shortcut to the resistor colour codes.

Two other lines that I will never forget came from the weekly Donald Duck comic magazine. For as long as I can remember my whole family's loved those strips and we've always had a subscriptin. My dad's even had a sub for most of the years that the magazine's been published in the Netherlands!

Unfortunately I had no way of tracing the quotes back to the original comics, even though I tried using Google. So I wrote a letter to Uncle Donald, asking whether his librarian could help me out. And they did! They put me on the track of the excellent I.N.D.U.C.K.S. website, which strives to index each and every Disney comic every published. Thanks to them I finally know which issues or comic books I need to hunt after ^_^

Ach en wee ben ik de klos, met mijn boog schoot ik een albatros! (Woe is me, I'm at a loss. With my bow I shot an albatros!) came from the 1966 Carl Barks classic The not-so-ancient mariner. This is of course a pun on The rime of the ancient mariner, by S.T. Coleridge.

RabarberBarbaraBarBarbarenBaardenBarbier (RhubarbBarbaraBarBarbariansBeardBarber) came from the 1991 Evert Geradts Rabarber. This was a two-page story featuring Gyro Gearloose (Willie Wortel). AFAIK, the sole basis of this comic is a dutch tongue twister, occasionally used in speech therapy.

Now! To schedule a day to dig through the piles and piles of Ducks at my dad's place ^_^ Glee!

I want this shirt really bad

2007-02-22 10:24:00

The number pi, with cherries worked in the image.

I don't care if this makes me the biggest, fscking nerd there is, but I want this shirt. I really, really do. It combines cherries, pi and cherry pie, all of which I am completely mad about. I can just taste a piece of cherry pie right now! I think I'll drop by the baker's this morning ^_^

Anyway, thanks to RStevens for always coming up with these great, geeky t-shirts :3

EDIT:

Now that I have the Flash audio player working, I just have to add another thing to this mix of things I love: Ed from Cowboy Bebop. The show's soundtrack contains a track called 3.14 and yes, half of the track involves Ed "singing" the first N digits of Pi. ^_^

Expanding my reading list

2007-02-18 13:16:00

The cover of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, issue 3.

Digging around Wikipedia, following link by link by link I've come across some other (comic) books that I really need to add to my To Read list.

* The collected works of H.P. Lovecraft. Duh! I've read some of his works and repeatedly find myself amazed at the man's skill of conveying horror and fear.

* The most notable works of J. Verne, specifically 20.000 leagues... and Around the world.

* The League of extraordinary gentlemen. The comics are reportedly much better than the movie was (even though I actually enjoyed that one).

* The five fists of science, another steam punk comic book.

* I've been told repeatedly to give V for Vendetta a try. Both the comic and the film.

* The witches of Chiswik.

* Necronauts.

Boy... That's going to keep me busy for a long while!

PVP, the animated series

2007-02-04 13:21:00

Brent and Cole.

Last Thursday PVP the animated series kicked off their first, subscription based season. Since they allow you to end your sub each month I thought I'd spring the $1.95 for the first ep. My final conclusion: no master piece, but not bad either. I'd say it's worth the two bucks, but only just.

The episode is rather short at six minutes, the animation is rather basic, the timing is a bit off and the writing isn't at the same level of the webcomic. Still, it's rather cool that Scott got this off the ground and I have nothing but praise for him about that.

I'm curious how the second ep will turn out and I may buy it at some point.

The iPhone seems popular

2007-01-10 20:17:00

Brent and Brenna from PVPOnline

Most of you guys've already heard about the iPhone dozens of times by now. Many websites have taken to posting specs, expectations and glorifications of Apple's newest shiny object.

So instead of boring you with more of the same I thought I'd link to two very enthused reactions from a corner not often heard from when it comes to IT: web comic authors.

Tycho feels very foolish after buying the Zune just a few weeks ago. He's even proclaiming the product as a whole to be dead in the water now that the iPhone's on its way. And here's the comic that goes with it.

Then there's Scott Kurtz who proclaims the iPhone to be the second coming of Christ.. Personally I wouldn't go that far, but I can understand his enthusiasm.

Personally I doubt that I'll ever go and get the iPhone. I like my cell phones as simple as they can be: a single purpose device for calling, SMS and modem. If I want PIM functions I'll use my iBook and if I want music I'll grab my iPod. Still, I'm very curious where this product'll go in the near future! I'm just hoping it doesn't bomb.

Coffee + NDS distraction = weird interview

2006-12-05 22:28:00

Holymoly... If you _ever_ wanted to know what it'd be like to be interviewed by a young girl with the attention span of a ferret on crack, watch this Winterview interview with R. Stevens.

Yes, he's the same Diesel Sweeties guy I talked about a few days ago... But this time around the cute yet hyper-hyped-up-hyper girl interviewing him is the subject :D She's silly.

Duck Power: Super Donald, FTW!

2006-12-03 19:53:00

Super Donald meets the Super Evronians

Ever since I was a small kid, I've always had a great love for Donald Duck. His short stories in his magazine and his longer stories in pockets, which at times came with some great artwork!

Today, while waiting for the rest of the Anime 2007 staff at Dordrecht station I ran into a new comic at the magazine stand: Duck Power, a sturdily bound and printed comic focusing on Super Donald in the year 2020. Super Donald of course being Donald Duck's super hero identity (apparently he's internationally known as Paperinik).

The story's pretty run of the mill when it comes to the longer Donald Duck tellings: a few surprises here and there, but nothing shocking. I love the artwork though and I do believe that the artists took a good, hard look at Games Workshop's Tyranid army from the Warhammer 40000 game. The Super Evronians look like a mixture of duck-tyranid. Very neat!

A quick browse through Wikipedia and a few other websites (including this thread on a dutch forum) confirm that these comics are actually quite old and that they were published in the Netherlands around 1997. Apparently the publisher's trying to peddle them again, after flopping the first time. Me, I could stand to read a little more.

PVP - Animated series.

2006-11-29 14:06:00

Brent Sienna from the PVP webcomic

Well now, this is interesting news: apparently the web comic PVP (Player versus Player) is being made into an OVA animation series released straight to DVD.

I've been following PVP for a few years now and, though it isn't the best comic out there, I'm still interested in their animated shorts. And at twenty bucks for twelve four-to-six minute episodes it isn't that bad a deal either.

The series' website includes a teaser trailer, so go and check it out.

Added two new comics

2004-01-12 19:17:00

I added two new comics (yet again marked in the left column with [U]). One comic was thought up way back in July of 2002 but was only executed sometime halfway 2003 and the second one was only done about a month ago (true story from work). Enjoy!

Tutorial: colouring manga with GIMP

2003-11-23 15:23:00

The last two days I've been working on a small tutorial which explains how to colour manga and other comics using the GIMP. I'd been toying with the idea of writing this thing for over a year now, after having to figure everything out by myself when I switched from Windows to Linux. Hopefully this'll get some use :) You'll find it in the Anime/Manga section.

Two new comics

2003-10-25 15:34:00

As you can see _finally_ there's two new comics up :) The one for 25/10 just describes what we've been up to the last couple of months, but the one for 21/10 has a whole story of its own :)

I made that comic especially for this thread on Ars Technica Openforum, where I invited everyone to help me pick out a new computer system for myself. I was really doubting between the Sun Blade 1500 and the Apple G5 tower. The first one would be great for work related things, but would also be "all work and no play". So after the poll and some more thinking I finally decided to go with the more spartan 1.6 GHz G5 tower! In the future we'll use it to edit our home videos and I even hope to get into the hobby of creating Anime Music Videos ^_^

Liane the wanderer

2003-02-16 22:51:00

Just as I predicted my ideas for the 'Misadventures of Cailin' grinded to a standstill after the third page (which I'm still coloring since that _too_ dropped out about a month ago).

So I hadn't touched my pens for about two months now, until I started reading one of my old SF novels. The book I read was 'The dying earth', by Jack Vance which contains five or six short stories, all set millenia in the future. The earth is dying, dozens of new races have evolved, the knowledge of technology has faded away and has been replaced by magic.

One of these short stories is titled 'Liane the Wanderer' and having finished the story I decided that I really wanted to make a comic out of it. So right now I'm about 75% done with it and I'll post it on the web ASAP.

I hope you guys like it and I'll be sure to bring it along to the Anime2003 convention in a week. ^_^

Trying my hand at comics

2002-12-07 22:30:00

Well, this is new :)

It's been a long while, but I've gotten into drawing comics again! But this time they're not of the usual "let's draw a comic about my boring life"-stock, but you'll be surprised to see that these comics span multiple pages and that they actualy have a story! :p Oh! And another change from the original comics is the fact that these new comics (dubbed 'The misadventures of Cailin') are in full-color!

The misadventures of Cailin

2002-12-07 22:22:00

Wai! Wai! Hoe! I'm having so much fun drawing these full colour comics!

I always was in the opinion that I couldn't do any _real_ comics because I lacked any story telling skills and because I didn't have a writer to cooperate with. Well, I started working on page 1 of 'The misadventures of Cailin' just as a lark, but now the story just kind of comes by itself ^_^ I don't pretend to be any more than I am, so I'll probably get stuck in a couple of pages, but I've already gotten three pages inked and two up on the site.

Of course I would be delighted should a serious story writer decide that he or she needs a mediocre artist to put their story into ink. Maybe together we could make a story worth while reading ^_^

In the meantime I hope that you'll enjoy the 'Misadventures of Cailin'.

New comic

2002-12-03 07:56:00

As the title on comic 11 says: "It's been a while..."

Not only have I taken a break from my website, but I also didn't get any drawing done. So comic eleven sums up the last couple of months (very tersely though :p) and has an added bonus: it's in full colour! ^_^ Wai!

Working on some new drawings

2001-11-26 11:00:00

So it's been a while since I last uploaded scans of my art. There's a good reason for it though :)

It so happens that I've finished at least five more manga-pieces and that I'm currently trying out something completely new (for me at least): coloring my drawings on the computer. I'm working on an Akira poster right now and already finished a small pic of Goten (from DBZ). In the works are two portraits of Alita (or Gally, if you so desire) and one of Kyoko Otonashi (from 'Maison Ikoku').

Be sure to check back in a week or so; I'll probably have them up on the web by then... Cheers!
