Round and round the bottle goes ... |
I've been toying with an idea for a while now. And this morning I had a visit from my field manager Raimond, who helped me on my way. |
Over lunch I decided for myself to go with the third option: moving my site and domain to a new provider. This would involve some work and preparations, but would save me money while giving me much more storage space and other nice features. Right now I'm split between three different companies.
Servage
A few of my colleagues seem enthousiastic about these guys. They offer huge storage space (>300GB) and bandwidth that I'll never use up anyway. The neat thing about their hosting is that they provide you with various software installations at the click of a button. Need a CMS? Pick one out of six and install with one click. Need a forum? Need a blog? The same thing. Unfortunately their connectivity options seem a bit limited though, with FTP and FTPS.
Besides, since I roll my own code and CMS I don't need all the software they offer.
Joyent
These guys are really cool, with a beautiful house style and good web applications for groups of people working together. They also provide a lot of help to the (Open) Solaris community, which counts for me. The downside to Joyent is that their plans are quite expensive for my needs. I have no need for collaboration tools as I'll only be hosting my website there. At $15 a month this is targeted at companies, not private individuals.
Dreamhost
I've heard good things from a few of my friends and fellow bloggers about Dreamhost. Their plans are a bit more expensive than what Servage has on offer, but I also like a few of their additional features. SSH shell access, SCP connectivity and such are great options in my book. Besides, their pricing isn't that bad either.
I'll be mulling over all of my options for a few days before making my choice. I'll get back to you guys by then.

Thanks for your input Jeff! That makes three positive referals to Dreamhost from people I respect for their tech knowledge. Three people who actually have used the provider for more than two years.
No disrespect to my colleagues, but they've only started using Servage recently.
I'll do some more digging RSN(tm). First I need to study for my BHV exam :)

Actually, I've only found out about the whole Leafyhost deal just two weeks ago. I never knew about the guys, nor that it was the initiative of two Arsians.
Still... *Nelson* Haha! */Nelson*

I recommend Dreamhost. I have had it for over a year now and they are great! I only saw about 2 hours of downtime since I joined. It isn't the fastest host out there, but for the price they offer a lot (including honesty). Also, I can't imagine living without SSH access anymore. Instead of painstakingly trying to unpack and upload a large program onto the server through FTP, WGETing a file and unpacking it server-size is (bold, em, big font size) SOOOOO (end bold, em, big font size) much faster (just seconds for the most part). It also really gets the job done for ruby-on-rails, PHP's pear, and Python's command-line repository interfaces.

Thanks for your input Jim :)
I also like the SSH access, since it allows me to build SSH tunnels from anywhere in the world. That's very handy when I'm on the road and checking e-mail through Wifi. Right now I rely on my employer's servers for that, but it's better if I can use my "own" server for that.

Take a look at this site: http://www.coupons.fm/
It contains all sorts of coupons, also for Dreamhost, 97$ discount when you register as a new customer.

Yea, I checked them out when you sent me that coupon code for Servage. But thanks for reminding me :)

Well...
It seems that not everybody is as happy about Dreamhost as the ones who recommended them to me.
There's a lot of varied reviews over here:

And their status weblog doesn't look too encouraging either:

There's multiple outages per day even! :/

I have been on Dreamhost for about 2 years now and I love them. Recently they seem to be suffering some growing pains and have had some outages. The don't hide their problems as they have a dreamhoststatus.com that you can use to keep up on what is wrong with various servers.
I currently have: 1) Wordpress Blog (installed from their one-click interface)
1) Message board (installed from their one-click interface)
3) Subversion repositories
8) mysql databases
27) e-mail address( 4 offering ssh access )
6) ftp accounts.
I ssh into their server and use mutt to check my e-mail during the day.
The only way I would move my stuff from Dreamhost is if I colocated a server or something similar.
