I've watched anime with Dana in the room before. K-On!, Last Exile and a few other shows, but usually she was too young to actually pay attention, or she was simply asleep. Today was new: I watched Totoro with her and she was fully aware of the movie. It was the first time that she actually watched anime :)
She enjoyed it a lot! And now she won't stop talking about the catbus, about the little dusties, about Totoro and about Mei and her friends. At first she was a bit afraid of the susuwatari ("soot spreaders", black dust bunnies), but she quickly got over that. It was a lot of fun, explaining stuff to her... How Mei was being naughty and dangerous, by walking off from home. How Totoro was having a lot of fun with the umbrella. How they all made the trees grow in the moonlight. And how the catbus ran, ran, ran and ran on his many legs :)
Let's see what we'll try next! On New Year's morning of 2011 we watched Ponyo, but by then she was still too young to understand.

Hi Megumi! At first I thought you were our acquaintance Kimberly, as she goes by the Megumi nickname online. When you mentioned a daughter, I knew you weren't her ;)
The "susuwatari" name is a lot easier to pronounce than "makkuro kurosuke". :D
Dana is 3.5yo now and was 2-and-a-bit when she first saw Ponyo. But with her 3.5 years she's now old enough to understand a lot of what's going on on-screen. The fact that it's all in Japanese didn't seem to fase her one bit.
I have to ask though, I'm very curious: how did a Japanese person living in Canada so quickly stumble upon this blog post, made on such a hidden-away website? :D

I was Goggling melting beads picture (don’t ask me why(^o^)) and found you guys! The my little ponies are awesome!
Well…I was born and raised in Fukuoka, Japan, trying to have a new life in Canada two years ago with my Canadian husband and my two Japadian (Japanese/Canadian) daughters. that is why I'm in Canada. oh my name is real one and it means love:)

Thank you so much for explaining! It's funny how things get found on the Internet :)
I just love the beadsprite ponies that my colleague's wife made for Dana! Not only do they look excellent, but it takes a big heart to make not one but three of those for a complete stranger :)
Fukuoka? I really enjoyed that city and the rest of Kyushu when we spent a few days there last winter. To me, Fukuoka just seemed like a really relaxed kind of city, despite its size. Also, the city zoo is pretty great and what's there not to love about Uminokamichi (a great park!).

You've been to Fukuoka!! My sister is living near the zoo...on the hill area. Every thing about Fukuoka is great! It's near water, city life and good foods! Wow...it's weird...Weird interesting coincidence.

I love totoro as well!
The little dusties...mac'kuro-kuro-suke...(it might be difficult to Pronunciate if you doesn't have Japanese tongue)
Anyway, How old is Dana? My daughter was 4years old when she saw ponyo the first time and she seems understood the story and concept.
At last...I'm Japanese living in Canada. I am looking forward to the update your web:)
