Missed the iPhone4 by a hair

2010-07-19 09:05:00

DANG! We missed out on our two iPhone 4s by -> <- this much.

My boss+friend Dick and his girlfriend spent a week in the UK and during their holiday planned on picking up two times two iPhones. Two for them, two for us. And -just- as they were sailing out of Harwhich harbour on Saturday they got the email telling them that the second pair had arrived at the store. DANG! ^_^

Oh well, we'll have to wait a few weeks for the dutch, SIM-locked version from T-Mobile.

EDIT:
Three pre-orders have been made at T-Mobile, two through my employer (for my boss and I) and one private (for Marli). Let's see when we get our hands on them!

Tracking my hyperventilation

Nothing to see here, just another entry in my logbook. Seems like the frequency's gone up a bit the past half year.

A busy summer: work, work, study

2010-07-11 22:45:00

The ETH0 logo

Whoo boy, this summer I'll be busy. Aside from the studying for my CISSP exam I'm also preparing a more tech-heavy presentation about BoKS Access Control for two events. Next week I'll be presenting at the Competa Tech Talk and in August I'm scheduled to appear at the ETH0 hackers/geeks/techies convention.

The first is a business-type gathering, with fellow admins and potential clients. Not very formal, but as I said: business oriented. The latter is more fun and is actually a camping conference. For a few days each year these guys hire part of a campground to gather with friends and to geek out. During the day they'll have tech talks, lectures and such on security and at night they party. Thanks to Mark for inviting me.

I might even bring Marli and Dana along for the day! ^_^

Tracking my hyperventilation

2010-07-06 05:56:00

A bar chart for the past five years.

Had another bout just after midnight. Oddly I was semi-awake when it happened and I didn't notice anything peculiar going on; it just started. Ended up with heavily burning/pricking skin and a heart rate of around 90 BPM. Managed to get back to sleep after ten to fifteen minutes.

Fscking electrons, how do they work?

2010-07-04 22:09:00

Excerpt from a Christian science book.

Ran into the picture on the left last week, while perusing Reddit. Yes, that's an actual page from an actual "science" book (ISBN 978-1-59166-423-9).

As an engineer and geek, this makes my brain hurt.

Funnily enough the publishers have taken the product offline from their website. Maybe the flak they caught from Reddit was too much :)

One suggested mitigated circumstance was that the author might have actually meant "charge" on an elementary particle level, as opposed to "electricity". But I don't think that excuses the writing.

Of sports, quiting and life

2010-07-04 20:14:00

Thursday 1/7: 18 minutes, 2.8 kilometers, 9.3 km/h average.

Despite making good progress and having an average speed better than usual, I quit.

For the past two/three weeks I've been forcing myself to go out and run (or cycle), knowing that I'll be bored stiff all the way. I made the first goal I'd set myself and finished the nine weeks of C25k, but now I quit.

Writing it like that it seems so easy, but I actually had a hard time coming to terms with it. But in the end it boils down to the fact that I had no internal motivation for running, at all. My whole run I'd think: "Why the heck am I doing this again?!". Originally I started on a whim, both inspired by Marli and hoping to inspire her to keep up her sports. When she indicated she doesn't need me for that, this motivation fell away. In the weeks after finishing the ninth C25k week, there was only one thing that kept me running. My best friend Menno.

He's always been a great support and motivator for me, including with my running. I did not want to be a quitter in his face after all of his support. We had a good discussion about it and after declaring LOVE & PEACE! (i.e. he was fine with it and I was fine with it) I'd decided that for now, enough is enough.

There are many things in life in which I aspire to excel. Sports however is not one of them.
