Finally! I've been anxious to see the upcoming anime First Squad and it seems that the wait is almost over. Japanator informs us that the movie/OVA will be premiering at the Cannes movie festival on the 13th of May, appearing days later in Japan. I'll probably need to wait a few months (another year?) to finally get my hands on a DVD, but at least there's now an end in sight :)

It's that time of the year again: Anime 200x is right around the corner! /o/
Tomorrow we'll leave for Almelo, to help things get started. Originally I'd be going alone with Marli and Dana visiting on Saturday, but seeing how I'll be putting in more time as a gopher Marli decided to tag along as well. That way she can keep me and Kaijuu in check, so we don't go overboard ^_^
It's exciting though! We're taking Dana to a hotel with over 1600 "crazies", which is something we haven't done before. I immediately started thinking about putting bumpers, spikes and barbwire on her trolley, but thought the best of it. Robert suggested something else :D
Anywho... I'm sure we'll have lots of fun and we'll bring back loads of loot. This year around I'm putting some stuff up at the Bring&Buy to compensate. Speaking of, I still need to go over Kaijuu's B&B list to see what I can snag before he puts it up on the table ^_^;

TWO! MINUTES! TO MID-NIIIGHT!
*sighs with relief*
At the proverbial "two minutes to midnight" the buyer of our apartment got his paperwork straightened out. All of his requests have been approved and he has now finally bought our house. That's one less worry for us :)

It may be a little odd, but I just have to profess my love for poached eggs. I've always had trouble making the "perfect" boiled egg, but no more! Instead of trying to keep track of the proper time and cooking pace without getting any feedback from the egg itself, I now get to see exactly what's going on. This allows me to achieve near perfection every time, with properly cooked egg whites and well heated but runny yokes. So tasty! It's great with breakfast (fried spam huzzah!), but to me it's also a safe alternative to the raw, cracked egg in my noodle soup.

I've written before about the Wormtooth Nation web/TV series. Last year I was charmed by this indy attempt at a steampunk film and I just had to get my hands on the DVD. It was just too good an attempt at a movie not to go rewarded. Luckily the creators have recently made a DVD available through the Wormtooth website.
Watching the movie a second time I did notice a few changes from the original web series. I think that at a few points in time (most notably the scene where O'Brien learns of Tania's amorous relationship with Bottom) they've fiddled with the sound just a bit too much, blurring out the actual conversations.
Anywho... I love having this DVD in our collection, making it impossible to ever forget about this little nugget of gold :) I'll probably rewatch it again in a year or three, if only because David Murphy's so hot playing the role of Bottom. *cough*

I'm a stereotypical geek when it comes to toys and neat stuff from my childhood. I still very much appreciate the things that were cool when I was a kid and I suppose it's true what they say: men will always remain children.
This means that, on occasion, I'll get the urge to buy toys just because I know I would've found them awesome when I was younger. In the past ten years I've bought Transformers, a race track (kind of like slot racing), trading card games and even a few gadgets. I'm not counting my anime/manga addiction because that actually only started in earnest when I was nineteen.
Unfortunately there's -something- that spoils it for me. I've noticed in the past that, once I actually owned the object of my obsession, it'd lost its sheen and I was less excited about it. I've heard people say before that some wishes are best left unfulfilled because the wishing is what makes it worth it. This is one of the prime reasons why I don't actually go on eBay and -buy- the Arrow Emblem toys on there. I have way too much fun hunting them down, finding pictures and learning about them! Actually owning the toys would mean the hunt came to a finish, which'd only make me sad.
And would you believe that the Japanese actually have a word for this concept? It's Otonagai (partially NSFW!), which literally translates as "adult buying". The Akiba Blog article sums it up very nicely:
[...] buying a lot of cheap sweets that we could only buy little when we were kinds is called Otonagai. As a kid, we could only buy little of that fascinating snack. Wanted to eat heartily! Right now, such a dream comes true easily, becoming an adult.
But most of the time, that disappoints us. [...] Otonagai is people's dream, but at the same time, it destroys our dream, too.

It's not often that I get to eat fish, because Marli doesn't like it. I'm usually limited to when we go out for dinner or possibly a bit of fried fish at the market in town. So imagine my surprise when Marli brought me mackerel for lunch, salmon for dinner and panga for the both of us. /o/

The past few days I've been tweaking and poking my Macbook, trying to make it just a bit better. Aside from the usual maintenance (cleaning unused files, installing updates, securing my WinXP image for Parallels) I've also put my hands on some cool, new pieces of software.
* Dropbox, 2GB of auto-synced online storage integrated into the OS.
* Cord, a somewhat nicer replacement for Microsoft's Remote Desktop.
* Geektool, which is too handy and cool to describe on one line.
* iPartition and iDefrag, two handy-dandy system maintenance tools.
iPartition came in very handy today because it let me repartition my Firewire laCie drive without having to move the data elsewhere. The drive's used for backups of our computers (plus some additional temporary storage) and I needed to remove three parts and add two new ones, all the while maintaining a forth. It worked a charm :) iDefrag might seem a bit of a waste, but it did help me save 4 gigs of space on my FileVault homedir.
Now... Any use for the aforementioned Geektool might not be immediately apparent. What it does is create an additional transparent layer across your desktop that allows you to "project" text or images. If you search the web for the term "geektool" you'll find loads of examples, including MRTG and Cacti graphs, or Nagios status buttons embedded on the desktop. In my case all I've got running are "top" and an overview of my current IPs, but I certainly see future use for this!
I've also ordered a 4GB RAM kit from Kingston Shop, which rang in at 56 euros. Would you believe today's RAM prices?! They're so low! <3 Moving from 2 to 4 GB will surely improve the 'book's performance when running one or more Parallels virtual machines.
I'm also thinking of getting a new hard drive for the Macbook, since I'm down to 15/160GB. I've got all my music on here right now, though technically speaking I could simply move that to a NAS for access through the home network. Hmmm... *ponders* 90 euro hard disk versus 200 euro NAS versus 500 euro Mac Mini... Hmmm...

I'm subscribed to at least two dozen Japan-centric blogs through RSS, giving me something to read on the train to work. This morning Deas Richardson of Rocking in Hakata wrote about Ubunuchu!, a recent manga to promote the Ubuntu Linux distribution. Distributed under the Creative Commons license, this comic is a great initiative to get non-geeky people to know about Linux and its easy-to-use brother Ubuntu.
Issue #1 is only twelve pages, but it's still a pretty funny read. The "OMG WIZARD!" drawing is absolutely awesome ^_^

Meanwhile, back at the Batcave...
As the title says, Dana's doing great. She's still the happy-happy baby that she's been so far and she's good'n'healthy. Recently we bought a whole wad of new clothes in size 74-80 because she's nearly outgrown the 62-68 stuff, meaning that she's definitely growing :D
Also, today she managed to sit upright by herself! Usually we sit her on our lap and then she sits upright by pulling on our hands. But not this time! Marli'd helped her up a few times, then all of a sudden she did is by herself. Glee! ^_^
The "noises" department has quieted down a little bit, so I guess she's done with practicing for now. Solid foods and such are still going swimmingly and we're looking forward to her "graduating" to the chunkier variations.

Meh... Yesterday we got a phone call that the buyer of our apartment is having trouble getting his finances settled. We gave him an extension of a week, but if he doesn't manage to get things done by then, the sale of our flat will fall through. Naturally our purchase of the house in Almere will also be cancelled then. ;_;
*crosses fingers*
Aside from that me and Marli aren't that great, health-wise, either. I'm still in pain from my recent tooth extraction and Marli has a severe head cold. We're unable to sleep more than two hours in a row, without either waking ourselves or each other up. Darn... I hope both discomforts will pass soon.
EDIT (@13:01):
In the mean time I've gotten a "reassuring" phone call from my advisor telling me that the purchase of the Almere house will continue any-which-way. So even if the sale of our flat falls through, we'll still have the house in Almere. On the one hand "Whoopee!" (we'll have our coveted house) and on the other hand "Whoo-pee =_=" (we'll be paying two mortgages).

I thought I might as well write some of this stuff down, lest I not forget all of it before my next operation. Either that, or so I can later prepare Dana properly should it ever come to that...
* The operation itself is surreal. You know you should be in agonising pain, but you don't feel anything.
* Also, it's -weird- to feel your jaw and half of your tongue phasing out.
* During the operation try to relax your neck and shoulders, else you'll be in for aching muscles for the next few days.
* Bring an MP3 player or something so you can listen to music during the operation.
* Make sure you have an ice pack waiting at home. Use it for three to ten hours.
* Days 1-3 are actually not that bad wrt pain, compared to days 4-7. In my case I had loads of trouble getting to sleep due to the pain and constant throbbing.
* You'll get a really foul taste and smell in your mouth. This is in part from the blood clots and in part from rotting crap in the hole left by your tooth. You can't do much against this, except rinsing.
* Rinse, rinse, rinse after every meal. Salt water supposedly helps the healing process and mouth wash keeps the nasties away.
* If a suturing wire comes loose and starts prodding its way into your gums, go have that part taken out immediately. Else it'll be a constant distraction and it could cause and inflamation.
So yeah... I'm on day 7, I'm out of Brufen and have been hitting the Paracetamol regularly. Today does seem better than yesterday though, so I'm hopeful this'll be over soon :)

A few days ago I mentioned one of the highly popular anime of this season, K-On. It draws loads of attention in Japan, with some interest in the west. Things seem to be the other way around (if the Ars fora are to judge) for Higashi no Eden (Eden of the east) (A.N.N.). I've seen little hubub about the series on Japanese blogs, though the EU and US blogs are going crazy. I might not be looking properly though... ^_^;
Anywho. I can't do the series justice with my short, crappy description. Hence if you're curious, go read Omni's review which includes many more screenscaps. All I can say is: if you're looking for a good scifi story, with terrific art and animation, go check out Eden of the east.
Menno, it's obvious I'm gonna put y'ass in front of the TV the next time you come around ~_^
EDIT:
Okay, so my post was very hazy on details as Kaijuu pointed out to me :) So what's HnE about? It's hard to describe so far.
There's a secret worldwide organisation that employes twelve Selecao ("Chosen"). Their tasks and purpose are as of yet unknown, but they are repeatedly asked to "continue being a saviour to the people". Each person is given a cellphone and 10E9 Yen in credit to spend as they desire. The cellphone informs the twelve Chosen of each other's doings and also connects them to their "secretary" Juiz ("Judge"). The male lead of HnE is number IX and has chosen the identity of Takizawa Akira.
The second theme running through the series is that of Careless Monday, an event in which Tokyo was struck by ten missiles. Their origins are unknown, but it is assumed that there are terrorist motives. Over the course of episode 1 Tokyo is struck again, by a eleventh missile. The ED sequence of each episode suggests that more missiles will follow and that Akira in some way is tied to them (or capable of stopping them).
The female lead, Saki, is there to pull the viewer into the story. She's both a lead character and narrator and follows Akira on his travels. The fact that they met in Washington might not be as coincidental as it seems! That would go into spoiler territory though, so I'll continue in the comments section of this post.

Unfortunately, two weeks before Anime 2009, one of our good friends and suppliers has fallen ill. This has caused a bit of turmoil for the staff, but like every year I'm sure things will work out.
In order to give my friends some breathing room I've offered to dig up my Staff shirt again, so I can take some of the load off their shoulders. It's kind of funny how I'm having a hard time letting go of "the con". It's like I said on a forum recently: "You came for the con, but then you stayed for The Con(tm)".

Wow, things move so fast! Dana's been with us for seven months now and we're already buying her a new carseat. She's grown too big for the maxi cosi she's had so far and she'll soon need a "real" kids' chair. Unfortunately, given that Dana wears a Camp spreader she won't fit most of the "normal" car seats from groups 0 or 1.
After digging about on various websites regarding developmental hip problems (like Heupafwijkingen.nl we were rather charmed by the french Bebe Confort product line. Unfortunately they don't have any distributors in the Netherlands, so we either had to travel to Belgium, or find a webshop. Finally we opted for a French shop that ships to the NL as well and went with the Iseos TT. Unfortunately Dana won't be able to fit into it immediately, but at least it'll be usable for the next 3.5 years :)

I don't even know where I found out about Templar, Arizona, but so far I'm loving it to bits! I think I was drawn in by a Keenspot banner featuring Reagan <3
Anywho... What I love most about Templar is the artwork by Spike. She does awesome line work and I love her chara design. For example, one can tell by one look at the aforementioned Reagan that she's loud, uninhibited, brash and sexy. The complete lack of colour and minimalistic approach to detail make this one heck of a comic to read. I'll definitely buy the books when I can!
Mind you, if you don't like swearing and such, steer clear of this one ^_^

That must've been one of the most fscked up things I've ever done: wisdom tooth extraction. You get in there, they give you a few shots, they hack and drill and twist and pull for fifteen minutes and your out of there! Honest, I wasn't even in there for half an hour, even though it's called "surgery". Makes you think, huh?
The anesthesia is slowly wearing off and luckily I've re-found control of my tongue. The rest of my lower-left jaw and cheek still feel mighty weird, though I'm told that'll last a day. Supposedly the roots of the mollar were quite close to a nerve.
Anywho... Today I'm staying home, resting up as much as possible. For now there's no pain, but I'm sure that'll change soon enough. I've been given a five days' supply of Brofen, so we'll see. I'm counting on going back to work tomorrow.

In preparation of our move to the new place we've started going through all the boxes in storage. The past three years we've managed to gather quite a lot of cruft, let me tell you!
Among my old school and work papers I stumbled upon a bunch of notebooks from past jobs, including my last internship. While mindlessly leafing through one of the pads I found the list of web comics I used to read. Man, that took me back!
Since then a bunch of those comics have gone bust and some of the others have lost their charm. However, that still leaves me with a short list of web comics that I'd forgotten and that I've now put back on my list. These include:
* Down to earth. God and the devil pissing eachother off.
* Too much coffee man. The depressed, stressed out and hyperactive superhero!
* You damn kid!. 50's style comics meet disturbing jokes.
* Bob the angry flower, home to Bob's quick guide to the apostrophe, you idiots.
Good stuff :) I'm very glad that the TMCM archives are still complete and online.

Like many of my colleagues and friends I became enamored with roleplaying games and TCGs in high school. I got my first set of Magic cards (3rd ed. woo! /o/) from my father who used to go on business trips to the US. I think I was fourteen at the time. Over the years I bought a big wad of additional cards, though I never did actually get "good" at the game :) I still have all those cards, neatly kept in a suitcase for a Later Time(tm).
Later on I got the First Quest boxset, which was our first introduction into AD&D. It really was a nice set for the beginning player. However, AD&D never really did it for me, neither story-wise, nor mechanics-wise. I did however get to meet Maya Deva Kniese, who was a huge AD&D-geek at the time. I believe she went on to actually work for WotC for a while. I wonder how she's doing these days (I used to have a bit of a crush on her, despite the age difference ^_^).
When I got into college our clique quickly moved to Warhammer 40k and White Wolf's World of Darkness games. All of this under the influence of Erik (Orc), whose surname has escaped me :)
EDIT: "van 't hof", that's it... That was his name.
Now, we never really did play many WoD games because none of us was really good at storytelling :) So basically we ended up mostly fantasizing about the stories we could be experiencing, instead of actually playing them :D I had a big stack of books, which I loved to pieces! I tried to get a few friends of mine in on the games, but unfortunately this actually led me to lose a number of my beloved books ;_;
Which leads me to tonight... I'd finally had enough of my moping about the lost books and decided to get onto eBay. There I quickly found the exact books I used to own for Werewolf: the apocalypse and Changeling: the dreaming. Obviously I will probably never play these games again, but I really do want the books back in our library. They made for nice reading/fantasizing material and who knows, maybe our kids will some day find them interesting.
*sigh* How things change when we grow older... My RPG books have been stuck in their boxes for over five years, I've sold off most of my WH40k army and even our game consoles haven't seen much use in the past year. Am I actually growing up? ;_;

There's so much to arrange for our move to Almere! *panic*
One of the first things I took care of was our Internet connection. I've made sure that Ziggo disconnects everything by 30/6 so we're not needlessly dragging our subscription along. Unfortunately there's only three companies to choose from in Almere, two of which I have no liking for: KPN and Tele2. So it seems that we're stuck with UPC.
The good thing about this is that we're getting a few upgrades:
* We're going from 1MBps to 10MBps.
* We're getting a DTV STB with DVR (acronym time! /o/).
* We're getting a bunch of extra channels, including SciFi.
Unfortunately this does come at a price. We'll be going from 55 euros a month to about 70. Darn. :/
So! There's so much to do! We'd better make a good checklist, else we'll forget all kinds of important things. My body's sitting still, but my mind is racing! =_=

There's no going back now... Well, there is, but we wouldn't want to, but at least the people selling the house can't back out anymore.
Yesterday, around 1430, we signed the contract to buy the aforementioned new house in Almere. It was a pleasant occasion and it was good to meet face-to-face with the previous owners. The gentleman in question has lived there ever since it was built in '85, so it's fairly safe to say that he knows the house.
We'd ordered an inspection of the building before signing and luckily they couldn't find anything wrong with the house, beside a few minor things we already knew. Total estimated cost of fixing them: 1500 euros. I reckon the actual price if we do a lot of those things ourselves will be lower.
Good, good! The last hurdle's the mortgage and I'm going to take care of that this afternoon. Now there's just a huge list of other stuff to take care of!
EDIT:
I just typed "farely" instead of "fairly". I guess I'm still sleepy :/

When I was seventeen and still living at home I used to join my family on our annual trip to the dentist's. That year the doc took X-rays and informed me that I would have to see a surgeon. Apparently there was a molar doing something "bad" in my lower jaw. He gave me the photos, wrote me a reference and sent me off. That letter was hidden away in one of my drawers for two three years, because I was too chicken to go. Then I threw it out during spring cleaning.
Since then I've had a dull ache in my lower-left jaw, which would return every few years to last for maybe a week. This year it made its return and I decided to go see a dentist again. Speaking of: since we moved from Nieuwegein to Utrecht (which was three years ago) we've never seen a dentist. =_=;
So off I went! The doc had good and bad news. Despite me not having had any checkups for close to four years, my teeth were in excellent conditions. A little caries, but no cavities. Unfortunately, the bad news was that I do indeed have a problem with my lower-left jaw ;_;
It seems that my lower-left wisdom tooth is mesioangularly impacted as they say. Or to put it in laymen's terms: the molar's growing in a diagonal-forward direction and is pushing against my back teeth. Every once in a while it'll up the pressure a bit, leading to the dull aches I've been having.
So... Now I have another letter of reference and the stern suggestion that I go see that surgeon. Soon. Because apparently around your 30th year (which is NOW) it starts getting more difficult to operate. I guess I'd better get over my fear, m'kay?

It's been a few weeks since I really got stuck in anime, so it was high time I got back :)
First off there's this season's hit (highly anticipated and hyped): K-On. Everyone and their cat's been blogging about K-On, expecting great things of the show. Like previous hit series about high school girls doing silly stuff (e.g. Lucky Star and Azumanga Daioh), K-On is based on a yonkoma manga series. Usually these comics have great gag value, but it's a bit hard to convert them into an actual anime with a progressing story.
Anywho, K-On looks good with nice character design and artwork. The acting and visual gags are very reminiscent of the aforementioned Lucky Star, though the series seems to lack any geek appeal. If one were sarcastic, one could sum it up as "Lucky Star, but replace otaku culture with music".
I'm curious to see how the next few episodes turn out. I hope they're a bit better than the first ep, because it didn't really tickle my fancy. The ED song is pretty awesome though ^_^
Also, when I last watched One Outs I cut off at ep15, since that was the last one available at the time. Now that the show's finished I can finally see how it ends :) I've got the remaining eps loaded on my iPhone, which gives me something cool to do on the train to work. While One Outs has a very low replay value (for me), I'm intrigued by how the story develops.

So yeah, we've already spent a bundle on the new house. Seeing how we're only six weeks away from getting the key we need to get our asses in gear and make all kinds of arrangements. The first thing we got out of the way is the remodeling of the bathroom.
Thanks to a special offer that ran at Brugman up until today we managed to save 1300 euros on the materials. This puts the total (materials, demolition and all the installation) at the 7k mark. I decided to let the builders take out the current bathroom as well, since that would only add 400 to their ~3500 bill.
The photograph above shows an impression of what'll go into the bathroom. The two biggest differences are the actual size (our room is much smaller) and the fact that we're getting a bathtub. I'm looking forward to our bathroom very much! :)

I'm very grateful for many aspects of my raising, one of them being my musical upbringing. Personally I'm not much of a musician (though I enjoy singing), but that's not because I wasn't encouraged :)
Through our parents we got to hear a very diverse palet of music, including classical, opera, finnish folk music and country. They never denied us our own choices in music either, even if they hated the music themselves. Heavy metal, house, pop music, everything was allowed into the house. We were allowed to try any music we liked, which was pretty awesome.
We were also encouraged to learn to play musical instruments, which in the case of my siblings has worked out wonderfully. Sister-dear plays the flute and cello, while my brother's a veritable one-man band. Me, I stupidly let myself be blocked by a fear of learning how to read sheet music and by the idea that playing the recorder "is for girls".
The above MP3 comes from Le nozze di Figaro. My father has a lovely music box with this particular piece and we loved it as kids. I was reminded of it today when watching Mezzo, together with Dana. We saw a wonderful performance by Teresa Berganza, which I've promptly bought on iTunes.
Anywho... There's not much point to this post except for two things:
1. I'm very grateful for how our parents brought us up :)
2. I can only hope that we can give Dana a similar upbringing.
EDIT:
Proof that my brother's indeed doing pretty well :D -> Distained. Menno, go check out that page and see if you can pick him out. My bro's done some growing up :D

I just got off the phone with our realtor and our bid on the house we want has been accepted. Next week we'll be signing the contract and then we'll (almost) be the proud owners of a new house!
Our house lies in the middle of the Almere-Buiten Molenwijk district, which is a very quiet neighborhood. There's loads of playgrounds for the kids and there's at least three schools in the close vicinity. Unfortunately there's little to no "nature" close by, so I'll have to ride my bike for twenty minutes to get to the Markermeer. Good enough for me.
After negotiations we all settled on 171k, which is a very decent price! That amount of money only buys you a small apartment in Utrecht :) After adding all of our costs, 10k in projected remodeling and the loss we took in selling our flat (about 7k) it all comes down to a mortgage of 207k. That's a 40k raise from its current level, all of which should be well within our limits. I never imagined I'd be able to afford a family house on my paycheck alone, so this is great news :D
So, what's there to say?
* The house spans three floors, and comes in at 120m2, 350m3.
* It has a 85m2 garden.
* The kitchen's in a very good state, though it's bit cramped.
* The kitchen comes with a full range of appliances, including:
** Induction cooker (which we'll replace with gas)
** Oven
** Microwave (which we'll replace with a new model)
** Fridge and freezer
** 3/4 size dishwasher (cool!)
* The bathroom needs remodeling, because it's from the eighties.
* The house itself needs little work: painting and a floor in the living.
* Due to remodeling, the master bedroom has a large walk-in wardrobe.
* The attic is large enough to divide into two rooms at a later point.
* There's oodles of storage space, which we definitely need.
If everything goes right we'll get the key on the 15th of May, giving us six weeks to complete all redecorating and actually moving in there.
