School is coming along nicely

2008-03-31 08:15:00

The Wii game Educated Mama

I've been in college for over half a year now and I'm about 3/4s through the first year. I've been enjoying the heck out of school and I'm glad I decided to make the step to getting a second college degree. Just think, in less than two years I'll be teaching math to a bunch of teenagers ^_^

In the meantime I'm going to make the best out of my studies. I'm not claiming their easy by a long shot, as I've spent many a night studying until midnight. X_x The encouragement of my friends and family helps a lot though and I'm really happy that they're keeping me motivated :)

So... That's almost three semesters down and one to go. Why don't we take a look at the score so far?

Statistics 1 - Didactics = 80%
Statistics 1 - Math = 80%
Didactics 2 - Project = 80%
Didactics 2 - Test = 80%
Analysis 1 - Didactics = To be determined
Analysis 1 - Math = Pass by default
Identity Development 1 - Project = 70%
Identity Development 1 - Test = 80%
Student counseling 1 - Project = To be determined
(WER) Traineeship Prep 1 = To be determined
SLB (my own counseling) = To be determined 80%

Well hot damn! It seems I'm doing pretty well! I also expect to get between 70% and 80% on the three courses that still need to be scored, so that's good news too.

Now, next semester we're up for Geometry 1 (didactics and math) and History of Math 2. Sounds like a fun semester!

Ugh, stomach flue sucks

2008-03-31 08:07:00

Well, isn't this a nice "welcome back" after a few weeks of silence on my blog? :[

Stomach flue, or any other gastric viruses for that matter, suck. I even had to cancel an appointment I had this morning.

Ah well... What can you do? Back to bed and then for some homework.

A map to Akihabara

2008-03-13 12:50:00

What a great find! A few weeks ago a reader of Akihabara Channel made a map with the most notable stores and cafes of Akihabara. Not only is this map very useful, it also clearly illustrates the sheer winnitude of Akiba ^_^

Thanks to this map I've also learned that I stuck mostly to the souther end of Akiba when I was there. There's a whole part to the north that I skipped out on! I know where I'm going next time I'm there ;)

Wacom, inefficient in packaging

2008-03-10 11:58:00

A box, loads of plastic and another small box.

A few weeks ago I complained at the Wacom helpdesk, that my stylus was not living up to my expectations. While the pen itself was still fine, the rubber grip had started falling apart within six months. Luckily they assured me that this was covered by warrantee, so I wouldn't have to pay thirty bucks for a new one.

Well today the new stylus arrived, or should I say "a big box of air". Wacom shunned no expense in making sure my stylus reached me in one piece. *sigh* Talk about waste! A box, fifty times the size of my stylus, a big wad of plastic bubblewrap and then the small box the stylii usually come in. What, an envelope wasn't good enoug?

I'm still happy with my shiny, new stylus though ^_^;

Animetal: rocking to classic anime songs

2008-03-06 13:04:00

During my search for new stuff on Arrow Emblem I've run into the band Animetal (Wikipedia). These guys have made over a dozen albums filled with heavy metal renditions of classic anime songs. I cannot begin to describe how cool some of this stuff is ^_^

Heavy metal Candy Candy? Check!
Heavy metal Arrow Emblem? Check!
Heavy metal Sailormoon? Double check!

The video below is for an excerpt of their Animetal Marathon 1 CD (originally found here). It has the opening sequences for: Daiking, Danguard, Machine Hayabusa and to top it off Arrow Emblem - Grand Prix no taka!

Huge expansion of the Arrow Emblem section

2008-03-03 15:42:00

Takaya Todoroki

Our brash and naive hero!

Today I've spent way too many hours on researching Arrow Emblem - Grand Prix no taka, instead of doing my homework. Still, it's all good since I'll finish my report in time (the one that was lost, yes) and this has cheered me up a great deal!

My search this morning rendered a whopping total of 59 new photographs of Arrow Emblem merchandise and toys, including some stuff that I'd never seen before. Awesome!

If you're interested in Takaya's adventures and would love to see all the merch that was put out in the seventies, visit the Manga/Anime section of my site.

EDIT (2008-03-05):

Make that over a hundredfifty new photographs! I've hit the jackpot over at Yahoo Auctions, which resulted in a boatload of new pics. I've also redone the galleries in such a way that they are very easy to browse, although loading each page takes long because of all of the pictures.

Besides that, I've also added separate pages for computer graphics and shopping advice. It turns out that an Italian webshop carries all DVDs for nine euros apiece! o_O

Goddammit! Fsck! Fsck! Two weeks of work gone

2008-03-01 16:23:00

Apologies for all the profanity...

Fsck it all to hell! I just threw away two weeks of work for this semester's biggest project because of a careless rsync. Fsck! Ten pages of well-written text, including research and some other important stuff: all gone. FSCK! This is what I hate about keeping two computers as primary work locations. When copying files back and forth it's so easy to make a mistake! That's why I used rsync, but apparently I screwed up. Fsck.

Yes, I do make backups, but only once a month. And since I'm not running Time Machine I can't simply go back to the previous version of the document.

I'm praying that PhotoRec can help me out. Seriously, if I can't get it back, I don't know how I can rewrite it all. Or more importantly, how I can even fscking motivate myself to write it again.
