New job and our first year's anniversary

2005-05-25 16:15:00

Currently listening to "Maximum wave" by Two-mix.

Well, today was interesting :) I'd made an appointment with an account manager from Snow, so we could go to $CLIENT in Schiphol for an intake / interview. The account mgr was nice enough and we had an enjoyable chat. The same thing goes for the guys at $CLIENT: their environment (three test labs for digital television) seem very hectic and don't seem to be much of a challenge UNIX-wise. However, they've got loads of work to be done when it comes to documentation and basic management tasks (monitoring, patching, security, etc).

Yesterday was our the first year's anniversary of our marriage :) We'd arranged a couple of nice things (among which the opportunity for Marlijne to drive around in her dream car), but unfortunately the day turned a bit sour due to our irritability and general sleepiness. We'll do better next time! Yay!

What else is there? Not much really. Tomorrow I'll be visiting the NLUUG conference in Ede. The whole conference focuses on e-mail, so most of the topics covered will be new to me since I've never had to setup an e-mail server myself. I glanced over the agenda for the conference and a few of sessions jumped out as interesting. I'm sure I'll have a nice day. And after that I'll finally have a couple of quiet days. Friday we'll take a look at a house we could end up buying, Saturday will be filed with mostly household work and Sunday we'll be paying the Airforce a visit. They've organised an info day to tell us how our family's doing (for those not in the know: my brother-in-law is a Chinook engineer in the Airforce).

Good byes aren't always that hard

2005-05-23 13:47:00

Rose of pain, by X-Japan.

Listening to such a melancholic song sure makes saying good-bye feel even more definitive, even-though it doesn't have to be.

Today I spent the better part of five hours saying good-bye to the many friends and good acquaintances I'd gotten to know in my three years at the Bank. It really did feel kind of weird to be doing so and as I said it also feels a bit final. But it won't be :) I'll do my best to keep in contact with those people from the so-called inner circle and to meet them regularly over dinner or coffee.

Just now my iPod switched over to the song "Unfinished" (which is also by X Japan) and if possible it sounds ever sadder -_- It also paints a nice setting for the good-bye card the guys gave me. It's filled with nice messages :) Some plain vanilla, some inside jokes and one or two that make me think, as no doubt they were meant to.

One of them is from one of the coordinators of the department and it tells me (of is it "confesses to me"?) that he's currently writing a proposal which will lead to the end of the security infrastructure I had been nurturing like a baby for the last three years. I must say that it makes me sad to hear such a thing on the day that I'm leaving: "Thanks for all your hard work! But now that you're gone we're just going to go ahead and tear it down." Feh! Whatever!..

Screw them... It completely takes away any feeling of guilt I might have had about a few decisions I'd made in the last couple of months.

/me slams the eMate shut

Screw them...

Finally we have ADSL!

2005-05-20 18:00:00

So we finally got ADSL at our place! I can't tell you how nice it feels to finally have some bandwidth to spare and to _not_ have to wait for a song to download from the iTunes music store. These days things go so rapidly! :) Marli really loves our new uplink!

Also, today was my last real "working" day at $CLIENT. I'd packed up all my belongings last week, so I didn't have to carry a lot of stuff with me. All in all it was a pretty relaxed day, just tieing up little loose ends. Monday I'll have a proper good-bye when all of my colleagues are back again.

Anime 2005 backlash: post-con depression

2005-05-12 17:56:00

Currently listening to "Seventh moon" by Fire Bomber

So, here's Cailin and Marli's sure-fire plan to Post Con Depression (PCD) prevention:
* On the first (and possibly second) night after the con, get as much sleep as possible.
* When you can, listen to some J-Pop, J-Rock, or whatever reminds you of the convention and our community.
* Read all the manga and watch all the manga you bought at the con, but try to spread it over three to four days. Break down the amounts you take in each day. So on the first day read at least three to four pockets and watch the same amount of DVDs. On the second do two of each and so on..

As you can imagine by the numbers mentioned above we went a little crazy when going through the Dealing Room ^_^; Yah... We brought home at least fifteen TPB manga's, three DVDs, a video game and a few plush dolls (Inu Yasha!!!) and a couple of wall scrolls. I guess we're silly that way ^_^;

Stress gone? Get ill!

2005-05-11 10:09:00

Well... I'm back among the living... Sort of. Check the Manga/Anime section for an extensive review of the Anime Con 2005 festival.

All that Crunch Time left me quite exhausted and once the stress hormones dropped away, so did my resistance.. Bam! Insta-head-cold! *snif* So I've taken a couple of days of sick leave to recuperate :(

Anime 2005: crunch time has come

2005-05-04 10:11:00

Wow! It really _is_ Crunch Time these days #_#
Friday, wake up @0530, goto bed @0230, thanks to work/stand-by
Saturday, wake up @1000, goto bed @0230, thanks to anime con
Sunday, wake up @1000, goto bed @0300, thanks to work/stand-by
Monday, wake up @1000, goto bed @0300, thanks to anime con
Tuesday, wake up @0530, goto bed @0430, thanks to anime con

And the next couple of days aren't going to be light weight either:
Wednesday, I'm really going to try to go to bed _early_.
Thursday is the first night at the Con hotel, we'll probably go to bed around 0100.
Friday and Saturday are festival nights, so we'll probably get to bed around 0230.
Sunday is the next night we'll spend at home. I'm sure we're _really_ going to crash and sleep until noon on Monday. _At_least_

Stand-by duties messing with my other work

2005-05-01 19:46:00

Currently listening to "Symphonie no 9 in E minor - adagio", composed by Dvorak and performed by the Koninklijk Concertgebouw Orkest.

While a nice Hindustanian meal of roti and beef is very enjoyable, it would have been more enjoyable if I hadn't had to consume it at the office... On the last Sunday before the big festival... The day I was supposed to be rounding off as many of my tasks as possible...

It'll be an all-nighter all-right -_- I need to finish the manual for the cosplay competition including full details for the Techies (luckily the Event Gopher manual is done), then take on the planning for all the 'generic' gophers with Marlijne, followed by the Dealing Room layout, the Game Room layout and, most importantly, the "draaiboek" (something like a detailed agenda of the complete festival) for the hotel.

Still, I don't envy Niels and Kaj.. They still need to sub and time almost the whole of VR3 :x

Anywho... About that Hindustanian (Hindi?) food. It was only earlier this year that I had my first taste of it and it has really grown on me. I started out with something simple as the bara, followed by nasi with lamb, kouseband and various other tidbits and ending up with roti. Some of this is a bit too spicy for me, but most of the food I really like.

Now that the time I'll leave the Bank for a new employer is creeping closer and closer, I've come to think of a couple of things that I'll dearly miss. One of the things is the Hindustanian food and the exotic atmosphere of the Bijlmer. Naturally I'll also miss my colleagues and customers: I've been here for over three years now and I've come to know a few of them quite well. Most of them are really nice people and I hope I'll see them again in the future! And finally there's the whole computing environment we manage: over three hundred servers across three seperate locations! It's really nice, although somewhat hectic.

Basically, the only thing I did not care for at the Bank was the way we (the foot folk / cannon fodder / peons / techies) were being managed. That includes just about all echelons of management.

I have a feeling by the way, that our computers know about my impending departure from the Bank. They made me come into the office no less than four times this weekend!
