Well, another hard day's work is done! I'll just try and watch a little of DNA2 before I go to bed.
I took an extra day off from work today, so I could rest a little and spend a lot of time preparing for the Anime Con. I've contacted a lot of third parties for our events and I've been pretty busy working on floor plans and Event Bibles (runbooks if you will). Things are finally starting to take shape. I'm sure that they'll turn out fun! :)

Holy moly, what a weekend! I can tell you guys right now that the procedure I wrote for switching NIS+ master servers is NOT fool proof! We had planned to only take about four hours at a max, for switching both NIS+ and BoKS over to a new master server. Unfortunately it turned out that we would only get to spend one hour on switching NIS+ until things went horribly sour.
In the end I spent a total of eightteen hours in the office on Saturday and Sunday. I'll spare you the gory details for now (I'll incorporate them in version 2.0 of the master switch procedure).
But God, what a weekend! And the way it looks now we'll be repeating it in a week or so...
Aniwho... I'm still trying to put as much time as possible into my work for the convention, but it's going slowly. I plan on spending every free minute of coming thursday on my Foundation work though. That should get me along the way nicely.

I must admit that these days it seems to be getting harder and harder to divide my time across my multiple "obligations". Of course, it could all be due to my distinct lack of sense for time and the lapse thereof.
Today I had to go to the office on my regular day off, just so I could feel assured that Saturday's big change will go according to plan. As you may have already picked up in between the lines, we'll be moving our NIS+ and BoKS master server to new hardware. I'm not so worried about BoKS, but NIS+ is a real delicate lady (who can be down right bitchy when she wants to).
The bad things is that I'm not spending as much time on my J-Pop Foundation work as I would like to. I'll work something out though :) I really don't want to let my fellow board members down. And I'd love our visitors to have a great convention!

Finally got round to writing the "Switch to a new master" procedure for NIS+. This procedure is damn handy when you want to move your current NIS+ root master to new hardware. This is something that we'll be doing at my employer on the 20th of November, so I'll keep you guys posted. I'll also be sure to update the procedure should anything go wrong :]

The way things are looking right now I'll be writing a whole series of articles for the discerning system admin :) As you know I finished an article on the crafting of proposals a week or so ago. Now I'm also planning to do articles on "keeping personal and project plannings" and on "catastrophe management".
I'll also be using my lovely Powermac G5 for something completely new today! At the office we lost two passwords for NIS+ credentials and luckily we managed to retrieve what we _think_ are the encrypted passwords strings. So now I'll try and use John the Ripper to crack the passwords. I've no clue how long this'll take and I hope I can get things finished before the 20th. 'Cause that's when I need the damn passwords :)

Last weekend was a pretty damn big load of fun! ^_^ Our friends Menno and Peter came over after an invitation for dinner, LAN gaming and a sleep over. Somehow we managed to get four computers set up in our kitchen, all the while still being able to move around without knocking stuff over. We spent most of the time playing Unreal Tournament and MoHAA, although I've now learned that the latter isn't really my taste in games.
In other news, today was a totally shitty day! :) At least now I can smile about it again :P
I'd planned on studying the intricacies of NIS+ all day, to prepare for a big infra change which is planned for the 20th. Luck would have it that as I entered my second half hour of reading all hell broke loose! Apparently one of customers was having a boat load of problems with the new SSH daemon we had provided their servers with. It turns out that the software their remote clients use to SCP/SFTP isn't compatible with OpenSSH, which itself adheres to standards pretty well.
All you sysadmins out there: beware F-Secure SSH 5.2/5.3 and its not-so-standard inner workings!
