The first selection for the event list for Anime Con 2005 has been made! A couple of days ago I sent the list to my fellow board members, so they could cast their eyes on it. I expect that in one or two weeks we'll have decided on the final list of events. Starting then the work will commence in earnest.
In other fun news, Marli bought us two new mouse pads at the huge LAN party which was being held in Nieuwegein this weekend. I'm now the proud owner of a white Icemat mousepad, which is basically a slab of matte glas. Cleaning is way easier now and I do have to admit that using the mouse is a bit more comfortable and accurate now. The down side of this mouse pad is the fact that you _must_ use the little feet supplied with it; else your mouse just won't go. Why's this such a problem? Because my mouse has small round feet, instead of ovals, and applying the supplied feet would block the contacts used for charging my batteries. Luckily the Icemat people also provide a strip of adhesive teflon tape which you can cut to size.
And finally: I've started work on version 2.0 of my tutorial on writing proposals. I received some hugely helpful feedback from fellow members of the Ars Technica and Sysadmin Talk fora. The cool thing is that I've e-mailed with the editor of ;Login: magazine (the tri-monthly magazine of USENIX) and he's expressed interest in publishing my article! ^_^ I'm pretty hyped about that!

Luckily I got my latest tutorial fixed. The PDF export function of OpenOffice.org 1.0 didn't work alltogether that well, so yesterday I downloaded version 1.1.2 of the software at OpenOffice.org. This time around the export function _does_ work, but not in the way I'm used to it from OS X. You cannot "print to PDF". Instead you have to do "File -> Export to PDF".
Aniway... A working PDF tutorial on writing technical proposals can be found in the SysAdmin section.

I've no clue what changed, but the last couple of weeks (maybe event months) have been quite different. I seem to be in a rush all the time, and tired too. Most nights I get about seven hours of sleep and on my days off I'll easily lay in bed until 12:00! Imagine that! Me, in bed at twelve in the morning! I used to get up at seven on Saturdays!
Well... I guess I can't expect things to stay the same all the time, can I? I just hope that things'll quiet down a little bit soon, cause I'm darn tired of being tired.
Aniway... To put a stop to my bitching: I'm done with the little HOWTO on writing technical proposals... You can find it in the Sysadmin section. I hope the PDF file will work for you guys, cause for some reason Preview and Acrobat Reader on my system don't seem to be able to open a PDF created using OpenOffice. The odd thing is that the document prints perfectly when I drag the PDF file onto my printer.

Finally my work on the HOWTO for writing technical proposals is done! I've added the PDF file to the menu bar on the left. Unfortunately, for some reason PDF printing from OpenOffice doesn't always seem to work properly. The file in the menu bar prints perfectly when dragged onto my desktop printer (albeit in black and white, and not in color), but both Preview and Acrobat Reader refuse to open the file.
If any of you guys happen to have any problems opening the file, please let me know. I'll see what I can do to get things fixed.

So, the last week or so I've been gathering suggestions for events for the upcoming Anime 2005 convention. I've also taken the liberty of taking a look at some of our competing conventions, to see what they're up to this year. I'll be making a first selection from the big list to weed out any events that are simply not possible. For the remaining events I'll do some research to ascertain the plausibility of each event, after which the gathered board members will decide which events will be chose for the convention.
On the Sysadmin side of things, I started work on a tutorial for writing technical proposals a little while back. Things have become a bit slow lately, but I'll try and finish version 1.0 sometime very soon. I'll also get some interesting stuff regarding NIS+ and its fail-over capabilities, since there's actually very little available on that subject on the web.

Well, it's official now :) As of today I'm officialy onboard as a board member of the J-Pop Foundation. For the upcoming Anime 2005 convention I will be responsible for most of the events that take place during the weekend. Of course, any suggestions and tips are more than welcome so feel free to drop me an e-mail or something. You could also send in your suggestions in the appropriate threads on one of the dutch anime forums (see the links section for those).
