Dreamhost hosting? Awesome hosting!

Go here for awesome web hosting In July of 2007 I found that I'd outgrown my web space at TransIP. While their service is impeccable, as is their uptime, their pricing isn't that great. I'd already entered the order to upgrade my package, when I decided to go look for another company entirely.

It took much deliberation, but in the end I settled on DreamHost. Mind you, that's -NOT- the dutch company Dreamhost.nl, who seem to be a cheap knock-off.

The $140 bill was a bit hard to cough up, but it was worth it! By paying that one sum I've secured myself a good web spot for the next two years. And thanks to a coupon donated by Clint I even got some extra disk space out of the deal!

The graphic above provides most of the marketing already, but let me reiterate what you get for your $7,95 a month. Or go read the full details over here.

Coupons and other discounts

Since I like DreamHost so much and since I'm happy that you read this far, I'm giving out some discounts.

By entering the coupon CAILINSENTME, or by clicking this link, you will get a $50 discount off your first order.

Switching to DreamHost

If you'd like to move your website to DreamHost I would recommend that you first spend a little time getting to know their toolset. DreamHost's web panel is impressive and versatile, but it does take a little getting used to. You should probably fumble around a little before you give the order to switch your DNS records.

The steps to get your site up and running are pretty easy.

If you do not own a domain name yet, register one through DreamHost. Then, put up all of your site's files in the directory on your file server. DreamHost will tell you which server it is. They provide both FTP (boo!) and SFTP (yay!) access, so you shouldn't have any problems getting your files there. Distributing the DNS changes for your new domain will take a day, maybe two. Once it's done, you're up and running.

If you -do- have a domain of your own, you'll have to take a different approach. The guys at DreamHost have written good documentation on the subject. However, here's the short version.

  1. Register your domain with DreamHost.
  2. Create a temporary $YOURDOMAIN.dreamhosters.com domain.
  3. Upload all your files to the file server.
  4. Test your site by visiting http://$YOURDOMAIN.dreamhosters.com.
  5. If everything's alright, tell your current hosting provider to change the DNS servers for your domain. This is done through -their- webpanel, not DreamHost's.
  6. Again, the DNS switch will take about a day.

It's pretty painless, though you'll have to know what you're doing :)
