To: ptr_feedback@phptr.com From: Thomas Sluyter Subject: Bug reports for Rick Bushnell's "SCNA for Solaris 8 study guide" Date: 20th of September, 2004 Dear Sir/Madam, The last couple of months I have been studying for my SCNA for Solaris 8 exam. To aid me in my studies I bought Rick Bushnell's Study Guide book, which is published by your company. In the preface you encourage readers to report and errors or bugs in the text. I hereby submit my findings. First off I'd like to mention that the copy of the book I've been reading was printed in 2002 and seems to be part of the first edition print run (if there ever was a second edition). Of course I realize that, with Solaris 9 being the standard for certifications these days, my list will be mostly pointless since there will probably not _be_ a second edition for the Solaris 8 Study Guide either. p15 Unlike what is claimed on this page chapter five contains absolutely no mention of the ICMP protocol, nor do any of the other chapters of the book. p22 Questions nine and ten appear to be wildly out of place in this chapter. Someone who has only started reading this book has no way of answering these questions yet. p32 My guess is that the line in the second paragraph on this page should read "... to a mere 250 m for 100 Mbps ...", instead of "205 m". p57 The schematic should contain a loop which checks for collisions during the sending of the frame, instead of checking after the frame was sent. The current schematic is not an accurate portrayal of the CSMA/CD workings. p75 In the section regarding ARP Request (Opcode 1) it should read "The higher level protocols carry", instead of "The higher level protocols are carrying". p124 In the last paragraph of the page a line of text was printed in double. "A host with a fourth octet ... 194.168.85.158". p162 For some reason the second paragraph on RIP already contains information regarding the workings of RDP. Seems a bit out of place. p218 Regarding the UDP length field, it should read "This 2-byte field is used..." and "...by substracting the IHL from the IP datagram that is carrying..." p279 Nearly at the top of the page it should read "... you must add it to the Solaris 8 file /etc/dhcp/dhcptab." Rick also says "Recall that the codes for options...", without mentioning where the facts he talks about were talked about before. I'm quite sure that these facts were not mentioned in any specifics earlier in the book. p285 The last bullet point in the list should refer to the /etc/default/dhcpagent file. p288 Each option letter in the table has the wrong case. Each option should be a capital letter. p300 The opening sentence for this chapter is completely out of whack! Network management is NOT a complex matter DUE TO the amount of SNMP tools available to us Sys Admins. p307 The bullet point refers to the Application layer of the OSI model as layer 5, which should of course be "7". p308 "We further explored the ANS.1 notation..." should of course read "ASN.1" p337 In the example for the bogus DNS server a semi-colon was forgotten at the end of the section. p339 It seems a bit superfluous to spend four lines of your page to simply mention that DNS can also do the reverse of what you're describing now and to tell that you'll describe _that_ in the next paragraph. p434 I'm quite sure that I'm right when saying that question 10 should have both answers B and C listed as correct. If I am not mistaking IPv6 can also auto-configure the global aggretable unicast address though the ICMPv6 actions "router advertisement" and "router solicitation". Now, as I said earlier I have no hopes for a second edition of this book since that would not be very profitable to your company. I however do hope that you will form a list of errata (which you also promise in the preface of this book!) and publish it on your internet site. Kind regards, Thomas Sluyter the Netherlands
